Denis Reggie (United States)

Famous Wedding Photographer Denis Reggie

Denis Reggie has been described as “the great wedding photographer of the day” by Town & Country and “the best of the best” by Harper’s Bazaar – not bad for someone who came into photography by accident.

Reggie was born in Crowley, Louisiana, in 1955 but originally his aspirations were purely athletic. His career, however, was curtailed by injury, but in order to keep hanging out with the football team he brought along his camera and starting taking sports pictures; a background that was to serve him well in the arena of wedding photography that can be equally hazardous.

The American Photo magazine cover story “The Top Ten Wedding Photographers in the World, “listed Denis Reggie first among them. For a series entitled “The world’s greatest wedding photographers,” a BBC film crew traveled from the U.K. to Reggie’s home base in Atlanta to produce a 22 minute documentary devoted to him and his celebrated photography approach.

Denis Reggie’s distinctive, spontaneous images have been featured on the cover of LIFE magazine, and named in “Photographs of the Year” by People, LIFE, Time, and Newsweek among other publications. He has been interviewed numerous times as a guest on NBC’s Today show and has appeared as a guest on Oprah! His photograph of Oprah Winfrey with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was highlighted on an episode Oprah’s Favorite Things.

He has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, VH-1, E! Entertainment Television, CNN and Fox in national and international broadcasts.
Reggie says that he still gets motivated when he sees the reaction of the bride and groom and their parents to his pictures: “I live for the reward of knowing that I’ve made someone’s life happier and that I’ve given news to people about an event that they would otherwise not have been able to understand or to see. It’s a great profession and I love what I do.”

  • Awards:

Denis has photographed more famous weddings than most of us have even read about. Many of his clients are celebrities of film, television, music, and political life including Ted Turner, Tom Clancy, Karenna Gore, Peter Jennings, Prince Alexandre von Furstenberg, Mariah Carey, Alan Greenspan, James Taylor and Don Henley.

Of his 1,700+ wedding assignments, more than 18 have been for members of the Kennedy family including those of Caroline Kennedy, and Maria Shriver to now-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. His iconic wedding image of John Kennedy, Jr. reaching, like a modern Galahad, to kiss the hand of his bride has been described as “one the greatest wedding photographs of all time.”

Angelica Glass (Long Island, NY)

Denis Reggie Photography

While working toward a degree in criminal justice, Glass took a job making wedding albums at a Long Island, New York, photo studio. When the studio was hired to shoot a wedding Glass was attending as a guest, her boss gave her film to take along—and fate took over. “The main photographer got lost,” Glass recalls, “so I just had to learn how to do it right there.” Her results were stellar, and the studio began using her as a shooter. A few years later she struck out on her own.

Like her clients, Glass has moved away from the playful trends of the past few years and shies away from cute props. “I think when people feel insecure they feel they have to detail their weddings to death,” she says. “I reassure them that it’s about their personality and who they are as a couple.”

That’s not to say she’s a stick in the mud. When the formalities are over, Glass grabs a 16–35mm lens and hits the dance floor to capture the thrill of the occasion at close range. “A lot of people hire me for the shots of the reception, because it looks like an insane, fun party, even if there are only 10 people dancing. Which is what everybody wants at their wedding—to have it be a great party.”

Susan Stripling (United States)

Famous Wedding Photographer Susan Stripling

Susan Stripling never knew that she’d end up a wedding photographer. Though she purchased her first camera in high school she went to college to study theatre and dance, obtaining a BFA in 2001. Shortly upon her move to New York city after college graduation Susan realized that the life of a starving actor was not for her and went on to consider several career paths.

She waited tables, was a receptionist at a failing dotcom, worked in a Broadway theatre casting office, and finally found her love for photography when she began studying digital and graphic design.

Susan has photographed weddings all throughout the US, the Caribbean, South America, Finland, France, and the Bahamas. She’s been published in Inside Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, Bride and Bloom, Modern Bride, The Knot, Professional Photographer Magazine, The New York Times Style section, Rangerfinder Magazine, Capture Magazine, Elegant Bride, in Trade Publications for Nikon USA, and Town and Country Weddings.

Susan’s teaching career has developed as well; she has been seen at past Digital Wedding Forum conventions, gives private and group workshops throughout the USA, and has spoken at WPPI.

Todd Laffler (Califon, NJ)

Famous Wedding Photographer Todd Laffler

Began his journey in photography when he was 17 years of age. His mother showed him how to shoot, develop, and print black and white photographs in her makeshift darkroom in their basement. He was blown away by the whole process, and instantly became infatuated. He started photographing what he knew best, which at the time was skateboarding. He even made his own skateboard magazine using his photography. After high school he went on the earn his BFA in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Todd Laffler photography style is best described as modern, fresh, fun, and sometimes a little quirky. He prefers to let the events of the day unfold naturally and just be prepared to capture them as they happen. While he does give some direction from time to time, he strives to inject fun into his photography, creating unexpected compelling images.

However, for the majority of the wedding, he stays in the background as a quiet observer, paying close attention for genuine and candid interactions. It is extremely important to him that the photographs he create at a wedding are both unique and artistic, and when seen collectively, tell the entire story of the day.

Ira Lippke (Brooklyn, NY)

Famous Wedding Photographer Ira Lippke

Most photographers who run upscale New York City photo studios don’t have the same background as Ira Lippke. “My parents are Christian hippies,” he explains. The oldest of five kids, Lippke grew up homeschooled in the Pacific Northwest, living in tents and a school bus. He got interested in photography at 14, when he picked up a $12 thrift-store camera. Later, he paid his way through college in Los Angeles photographing bands and weddings.

After graduation, he stayed in L.A. and plunged into fashion work, but of all things, an absolutely perfect shoot convinced him that he should be doing something else. “Everything went exactly the way I wanted,” he recalls. “I had great models, great stylists, a great magazine to work with. Then I realized that the issue would be in recycle bins a month later. I decided that I wanted my pictures to be treasures.” To that end, he opened a studio in Long Beach, California, specifically focused on weddings.

Lippke made another major shift in 2007 when he moved his business to New York. “I always just felt like I belonged here,” he says. His studio caters to upscale weddings with a classic documentary style. “Our work is pretty straight,” he says. “We steer away from the trendy stuff.”

Indeed, an attempt to capture the timelessness of people’s connection to one another seems to be key to the studio’s identity. “Even if the ceremony is done at a dance club by a friend who was ordained on the Internet, what’s happening between these people is a sacred thing,” he says. “There’s a mystery to it. And the essence of mystery is that you never come to the end of it. Photography accesses the immaterial. Even though a photo is a physical thing, photography is a medium that plumbs the soul.”
