Kevin Carter

Kevin Carter (1960 -1994) Born in Johannesburg, Carter was an award-winning South African photojournalist. Carter had started to work as sports photographer in 1983. In 1984 he moved on to work for the Johannesburg Star, bent on exposing the brutality of apartheid.

Sudan 1994 Famine stricken child crawling towards the United Nations camp. A vulture in the background is waiting for the child to die. No one knows the fate of this child as photographer Carter left the scene after taking the photo. Months later Kevin Carter committed suicide.

Frank Fournier

Frank Fournier (born 1948 in Saint-Sever) is a French photographer. The son of a surgeon, he originally studied medicine for four years before becoming a photographer. He moved to New York and became a staff photographer at Contact Press Images in 1982 after joining the office staff in 1977. He is most well-known for his coverage of the 1985 Armero tragedy in Colombia. A volcano erupted, which led to a mudslide that killed thousands of people. His portrait of Omayra Sanchez, a 13-year-old trapped under the debris of her home, won the 1986 World Press Photo award.

Robert Capa

Born in Budapest, Robert Capa was a 20th century self-proclaimed photojournalist. He was mostly famous as a combat photographer, as he covered as many as five wars, namely, the Spanish civil war, the Sino-Japanese war II, World War II, Arab-Israel War in1948 and the Indo-China war. He always emphasized on catching real life moments, rather than studying about the technical details. Capa is the co-founder of ‘Magnum photos’, along with Henri Cartier-Bresson. He had a sad end at the age of 40, while covering the first Indo-China war, when he stepped on a landmine.

James Nachtwey

Recognized as a war photographer, James Nachtwey is an American. He has been honored with the record number of 5 awards, including the ‘Robert Capa Gold Medal’ of the ‘Overseas Press Club’. He is also famous for his film on photography and photojournalism. He got wounded while taking pictures, during the year 2003, in Baghdad. He has managed to capture many major events around the world with his camera, like – the 9/11 attacks on WTC, the tsunami in 2004, the Sudan conflict, the US invasion of Iraq and many more.

Arno Minkkinen

Arno Rafael Minkkinen was born in Helsinki, Finland in June of 1945 and emigrated to the United States in 1951. He was educated at Wagner College (BA in English, 1967). He studied photography at the New School For Social Research under George Tice, at the School of Visual Arts under Ralph Hattersley and at the Rhode Island School of Design (where he received a MFA in photography in 1974) under Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan. Minkkinen has worked as a copywriter at various advertising agencies and as a lecturer and instructor of photography at MIT, the Institute of Industrial Design in Helsinki, and the Philadelphia College of Art.

Joe McNally

Tagged as one of the most influential photographers of the 21st century, Joe McNally is known for the photo collection, ‘Faces of Ground Zero’. This collection has 246 images which features rescue workers and other people brave people associated with the September 9/11 tragedy. The specialty of photographs taken by this American photographer is the skillful use of light and color. The complexity and technicalities involved in his assignments also displays the expertise he possesses. ‘The Future of Flying’ a 2003 issue of ‘National Geographic’ (2003) featured photographs under the theme of future of aviation industry. It was the best-selling issue ever, of the National Geographic.
